ProTip is a wearable concept designed to streamline the restaurant dining experience by streamlining communication between the front of the house and back of the house .

 

The system:

-Allows the chef to ALERT the server when their table’s order is ready

-Allows the server to give immediate customer feedback to chef(positive reinforcement)

Team: Worked in a team of 2 with Xianne Tria

Technology: Arduino Pro + XBee for wireless communication + 3-D Printed enclosure with soft encasement

Design Process

Our goal was to design a wearable that would allow for wireless communication. We identified a need for such a system in a mid-sized restaurant where a lack of communication between the back-end and front-end staff could result in:

  • Low efficiency of waiters
  • Poor customer experience due to longer wait times or even the possibility of food becoming cold

Time spent by waiters in checking for orders could instead be spent with customers to ensure better hospitality. This is the problem we are trying to address.

To inform our design we conducted the following activities:

Informal Interview: My team mate had prior experience working at a restaurant and so I decided to ask her some questions about her experience to be able to gain insights on the experience.

Bodystorm: We cooked a meal together while roleplaying as a chef and server to try and validate placement of the wearable. I tied a hairband around my arm and strapped an android phone to see how it felt, if could sense the vibration etc.
